New Physics-Based Turbocharger Data-Maps Extrapolation Algorithms: Validation on a Spark-Ignited Engine

چکیده
Objectives in terms of pollutant emissions and fuel consumption reduction, as well as development costs and time to market reduction, has led car manufacturers to use more and more system simulation. However, among all the fields in which it has enabled to achieve these goals, the control development stage is one of those, in which major improvements can still be achieved. In this context and with the increasing penetration of downsized engines, turbocharger modeling has become one of the biggest challenges in engine simulation. This paper focuses on the validation of compressor and turbine data maps, extrapolated using new physics-based extrapolation algorithms. The study led to excellent prediction performances for two classical control-oriented models. Conclusions stresses: 1The improvement of the extrapolation robustness, in particular in the low turbocharger rotational speeds zone. 2The possibility to keep a low calculation time as well as maintaining the same calibration effort.

Parameterization and Transient Validation of a Variable Geometry Turbocharger for Mean-Value Modeling at Low and Medium Speed-Load Points
The parameterization of variable geometry turbochargers for mean-value modeling is typically based on compressor and turbine flow and efficiency maps provided by the supplier. At low turbocharger speeds, and hence low airflows, the heat exchange via the turbocharger housing affects the temperature-based measurements of the efficiencies. Therefore, the lowspeed operating regime of the turbocharg...

This paper develops an exhaust manifold pressure estimation method for a Diesel engine equipped with a variable geometry turbine (VGT) turbocharger. Extrapolated VGT data-maps are used directly for the estimation of the exhaust pressure using a noniterative Newton-Raphson based method suitable for real-time applications. This approach can give more accurate estimations than traditional methods ...
متن کاملHeat Transfer Analysis in a Turbocharger Turbine: an Experimental and Computational Evaluation
This paper presents the performance of a turbocharger under non-adiabatic conditions in order to assess the impact of heat transfer. A commercial turbocharger was installed on a 2.0 liter diesel engine and measurements were conducted for a range of engine speeds and loads. The test results enabled to assess the impact of the engine on the temperature distribution of the bodies constituting the ...
متن کاملDetecting Knock in Spark Ignited Engines
In this paper we consider signal processing algorithms for detecting knock, i.e. auto-ignition of unburned fuel, in spark-ignited engines. To operate an engine with optimal efficiency, there is a need to operate close to the knock limit. This motivates the need for efficient knock detection algorithms that not only indicates knock, but also gives estimates on knock timing and size. The proposed...
متن کاملExhaust Manifold Pressure Estimation on a Turbocharged Si-engine with Wastegate
In turbocharged engines with wastegate the exhaust pressure can change rapidly. A method to estimate the exhaust manifold pressure is presented for diagnosis of wastegate and turbocharger on spark-ignited engines. It does not require any extra sensors in the exhaust system after the calibration. A non-linear model is developed of the exhaust pressure. Estimates of the exhaust manifold pressure ...
